Andersonville National Historic Site is the location where once the biggest Confederate military prison stood. Officially called Camp Sumter, this prison unit held some 45,000 captured Union soldiers and over 12,000 of these men died of starvation, malnutrition and disease during the 14 months it was used. The site holds a partially reconstructed holding camp, as well as the National Prisoner of War Museum and the Andersonville National Cemetery, which is still used in the present day. This haunting site sits just east of the town of Andersonville in the southwestern portion of the state.
